The Ten Cannots

My sister sent me this one:
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence.
And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.

–William J. H. Boetcker, 1916 (often mistakenly attributed to Abraham Lincoln)

Julia Nunes and the new music biz

Ok, so those of you who are way more hip than me have probably discovered her already but this young woman has nearly 35,000 subscribers on youtube and over 690,000 plays. I know people who've played for decades without being exposed to that many people. She's creative & talented and alright, the fact that she's 19 and cute as heck probably ain't hurtin' her either. But I'll tell you, while lots of us sit around discussing where the music business is going, this is what's happening out there.

Oh, by the way, did I mention she's from Western New York?

Keep Turning Left

I recently discovered this video series on youtube. The creator, Dylan Winter, is circumnavigating Great Britain in a small sailboat. His style of narration and the places he's visiting are making for a fun, vicarious, trip around the UK. Be sure to check out Keep Turning Left

Here's the first episode to get you started:

Canal Freight Revival

Unfortunately it seems likely that this sort of traffic would mostly divert up the Oswego canal into Lake Ontario. From there the Welland is still available to get further West. Would be neat to see a bunch of big barge traffic coming down through Black Rock though.

From my revolutionary hero

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

On this Independence Day

when it sometimes seems that our country, our very way of life, has nearly vanished, here's a little song to bolster our spirit and connect us to our past.

HAIL COLUMBIA (The PRESIDENT's MARCH)

Words by Joseph Hopkinson, 1798
sung by Gilbert Fox, 25 April 1798
in the New Theatre, Philadelphia
Tune: The President's March, by Philip Phile, 1798
(Southern Harmony, p. 141)
MIDI: http://www.ccel.org/s/southern_harmony/midi/Hail,_Columbia.midi

Hail Columbia, happy land!
Hail, ye heroes, heav'n-born band,
Who fought and bled in freedom's cause,
And when the storm of war was gone
Enjoy'd the peace your valor won.
Let independence be our boast,
Ever mindful what it cost;
Ever grateful for the prize,
Let its altar reach the skies.
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers join'd,
Peace and safety we shall find.

Immortal patriots, rise once more,
Defend your rights, defend your shore!
Let no rude foe, with impious hand,
Invade the shrine where sacred lies
Of toil and blood, the well-earn'd prize,
While off'ring peace, sincere and just,
In heav'n we place a manly trust,
That truth and justice will prevail,
And every scheme of bondage fail.
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers join'd,
Peace and safety we shall find.

Sound, sound the trump of fame,
Let Washington's great fame
Ring through the world with loud applause,
Let ev'ry clime to freedom dear
Listen with a joyful ear,
With equal skill, with godlike pow'r,
He governs in the fearful hour
Of horrid war, or guides with ease
The happier time of honest peace.
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.

Behold the Chief who now commands,
Once more to serve his country stands.
The rock on which the storm will break,
But armed in virtue, firm and true,
His hopes are fixed on heav'n and you.
When hope was sinking in dismay,
When glooms obscur'd Columbia's day,
His steady mind from changes free
Resolved on death or liberty.
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers join'd,
Peace and safety we shall find.
