A Barking Dog

This isn't along my regular line of discussion here. I just discovered that Dave Stevens has a blog. Dave started a mailing list for live audio folks a long time ago. It morphed into a web board that he eventulally sold. I don't know him personally but as someone making a career out of working in audio he has my respect.

Just for fun....

Check out: Old-Computers.Com
My buddy Yoram had a Commodore Vic 20, that may have been the first home computer I ever saw up close. I had a TI99-4A that Dad traded a customer for, along with a succession of hand me down TRS80 Business computers (Model I & Model III). Who'd have thought we'd get from there to here.

Just added a link to Frugal Audio, my frelance/business site, to the sidebar. Also added links to Mercy Corps and Catholic Relief. Both good places to go if you'd like to make a donation to aid in Tsunami relief.

Can, or should, Catholics receive communion in a protestant church?

A recent family event prompted this question. Jimmy Akin was kind enough to post this response on his blog.

In addition to the Canon sited by Mr. Akin I also discoverd the following:
132. On the basis of the Catholic doctrine concerning the sacraments and their validity, a Catholic who finds himself or herself in the circumstances mentioned above (nn. 130 and 131) may ask for these sacraments only from a minister in whose Church these sacraments are valid or from one who is known to be validly ordained according to the Catholic teaching on ordination.
This is from a 1993 document, approved by the Holy Father, called DIRECTORY FOR THE APPLICATION OF PRINCIPLES AND NORMS ON ECUMENISM which can be found on the Vatican website.

The key is the phrases refering to Valid Sacraments and Valid Ordination. Since a Catholic understanding of the Eucharist & of Ordination does not allow for validity in a Protestant church then we should respectfully decline to participate in communion at a Protestant worship service.

In a broader sense it would seem to me that it would be dishonest to receive communion at the Protestant service as well. When we receive the Eucharist we not only receive the Body & Blood of the Lord but we are joined to his body, The Church. That body of believers who share the same understanding and faith in these great mysteries that we do. To participate in Communion is to say that we are one. For a believing Catholic to do so in a Protestant setting is, in effect, to lie. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Not only is this injurious to ourselves, it is also dishonest and disrespectful of those Brothers & Sisters who love the Lord deeply, but whose faith differs from our own.

When pointing out the Church's teaching on matters such as this in the past I have sometimes been accused of being judgemental. I suppose that it's a part of my personaly that I come across as stiff and legalistic. That isn't my intention. God gave us the Church to guide & protect us. We have a duty to Him, to ourselves and to all men to always speak the truth with love.
