Habemus Papam!

WOW! I just returned from two weeks in Ireland. In that time traveling among priests and religious, Lay ministers and a couple bishops, one thing was agreed: Cardinal Ratzinger wouldn't be the one. Look who's talking now! I believe that the world is in for a big surprise. While many will wail of iminent doctrinal intransigency, I think many will find that the Holy Spirit has given the church a kind, loving, prayerful and faithful father.
In these weeks when the eyes of the whole world have been on Rome I find it challenging too. Fox News has run for at least an hour a graphic which says: "Habemus Papam". In Latin, a language believed to belong only to academics and stodgy catholics, a secular network proclaims: "We have a Pope"!
Surely we can change the world.
Long live Pope Benedict XVI.

Sede Vacante

The chair is empty. Our Papa is dead.
I did not know how much I loved this man until the tears began to well up. I was sitting with my mother in the rehab home where she is recuperating when the news came on CNN of the Holy Father's passing. My mother, who has born her own cross throughout recent weeks, reached out and placed her hand on my shoulder to comfort me. My heart is breaking from the loss. Still sad as I am, I find this to be a glorious time too. Today, on the vigil of Mercy Sunday which he promulgated, a Saint is born. As surely as we are praying for John Paul II, he is praying for us at the feet of our Lord. God be praised for sending us such a remarkable sheperd.
